Day Trips from the Dolomites: 6 Destinations

Adrenaline Adventures

San Vigilio di Marebbe is the beating heart of the Dolomites, but its strategic position between Italy and Austria also makes it the perfect base for exploring some of Europe's most captivating cities. Whether it is a rainy day in the mountains or simply a desire to alternate adventure with culture, these six destinations are all reachable within a day β€” and each will give you a completely different experience.

Here is our guide to the best day trips from San Vigilio, with driving times, what to see and our advice on combining city visits with adventure.

1. Bolzano β€” The Capital of South Tyrol

1 Hour by Car

Bolzano is the closest destination and the ideal choice for a relaxed afternoon or a rainy day. This bilingual city where Italian and Germanic culture meet offers a unique charm.

What to see:

  • Archaeological Museum (Oetzi): the famous 5,300-year-old Iceman, one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the world
  • Piazza Walther: the elegant heart of the city, surrounded by arcades and historic cafes
  • Via dei Portici: Bolzano's oldest commercial street, perfect for shopping
  • Castel Roncolo: the "illustrated castle" with the largest cycle of secular frescoes from the Middle Ages

How to get there: SS244 to Brunico, then the A22 motorway (Brenner highway)

Bolzano works perfectly as a half-day trip: visit it in the afternoon after a morning of zipline in San Vigilio. The Oetzi Museum closes at 18:00 (last entry 17:30). In summer, the fruit and vegetable market in Piazza delle Erbe is a colourful treat.

Best for: rainy days, history lovers, shopping

2. Merano β€” Spas and Gardens

1 Hour 30 Minutes by Car

Merano is the belle epoque jewel of South Tyrol: elegant, refined and surrounded by spectacular mountains. It is famous for its thermal baths, botanical gardens and a town centre brimming with Central European charm.

What to see:

  • Terme Merano: 25 indoor and outdoor pools, panoramic sauna with mountain views β€” perfect for unwinding after days of hiking
  • Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle: 12 hectares of botanical gardens with plants from around the world, voted among the most beautiful in Italy
  • Tappeiner Promenade: one of the most scenic walkways in the Alps, lined with palms and cypresses
  • Old town: medieval arcades, Viennese-style cafes and artisan shops

How to get there: via Brunico and the MeBo highway, or via Passo delle Erbe (more scenic but longer)

Best for: couples, relaxation, hot days

3. Cortina d'Ampezzo β€” The Pearl of the Dolomites

1 Hour by Car

Cortina is the most glamorous mountain resort in Italy, host of the 2026 Winter Olympics. Even in summer, its elegant pedestrian centre and breathtaking views of the Tofane and Cristallo peaks are worth a visit.

What to see:

  • Corso Italia: the luxury shopping street, with designer boutiques and historic cafes
  • Faloria Cable Car: panoramic ascent with 360-degree views of the Dolomites
  • Lake Misurina: 30 minutes from Cortina, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites
  • Cinque Torri: spectacular rock formations accessible by chairlift

How to get there: SS244 to Brunico, then SS49 and Cimabanche Pass, or via Dobbiaco

Best for: mountain lovers, shopping, photography

4. Innsbruck β€” The Capital of the Alps (Austria)

1 Hour 30 Minutes by Car

Crossing the Brenner Pass and finding yourself in the capital of Austrian Tyrol is a captivating experience. Innsbruck combines Habsburg history, contemporary architecture and a spectacular alpine setting β€” all less than two hours from San Vigilio.

What to see:

  • Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl): the city's symbol, with 2,657 gilded copper tiles
  • Hofburg: the Habsburg imperial palace with richly decorated state rooms
  • Bergisel: the ski jumping hill designed by Zaha Hadid, with panoramic terrace
  • Altstadt (old town): colourful lanes, cafes and traditional pastry shops
  • Swarovski Crystal Worlds: 20 minutes from Innsbruck, a crystal wonderland (especially good with children)

How to get there: A22 to the Brenner Pass, then A13 motorway towards Innsbruck. Bring your passport (or ID card for EU citizens).

Innsbruck is in Austria, so the currency is the euro (no exchange needed). However, Austrian motorways require a vignette (available online or at service stations near the border, approximately EUR 10 for 10 days). Note that Austrian speed limits are stricter than Italian ones.

Best for: families, history, architecture

5. Verona β€” The City of Romeo and Juliet

2 Hours 30 Minutes by Car

Verona is the quintessential romantic city. The Roman Arena, Juliet's House and a UNESCO-listed old town make it an unmissable day trip, especially for couples on holiday.

What to see:

  • Verona Arena: the 1st-century Roman amphitheatre, still hosting concerts and operas
  • Juliet's House: the famous balcony (crowded but evocative) and courtyard with Juliet's statue
  • Piazza delle Erbe: the vibrant heart of the city, with market stalls, frescoed palaces and outdoor cafes
  • Ponte Pietra and Roman Theatre: spectacular views over the Adige River
  • Castelvecchio: art museum in a medieval riverside castle

How to get there: A22 southbound (Brenner motorway), exit Verona Nord

Best for: couples, culture, gastronomy

6. Venice β€” La Serenissima

3 Hours by Car (or Train)

Venice needs no introduction. The most unique city in the world is reachable in a day from San Vigilio β€” a long trip but absolutely doable and unforgettable.

What to see:

  • St Mark's Square and Basilica: the heart of Venice, with the bell tower and the Doge's Palace
  • Rialto Bridge: the city's most famous bridge, surrounded by markets and workshops
  • Murano and Burano: the glass and lace islands, reached by waterbus
  • Wandering the backstreets: getting lost in the less touristy sestieri is the best way to discover Venice

How to get there: A22 to Verona, then A4 to Mestre. Park at Mestre (Tronchetto or Piazzale Roma) and take the train/waterbus to Venice. Alternatively, take the train from Brunico or Fortezza with a change in Verona.

Train tip: the train is often more convenient than driving to Venice. From Fortezza (40 min from San Vigilio), direct trains or with one change. The journey takes about 3.5 hours but you avoid the parking problem.

Best for: everyone, special occasion, photography
