Best Season to Visit the Dolomites

Adrenaline Adventures

"When is the best time to visit the Dolomites?" It is the question we receive most often. The honest answer is: it depends on what you are looking for. The Dolomites are an extraordinary destination in every season, but each one offers a completely different experience.

In this month-by-month guide, we will help you choose the perfect time for your Dolomites holiday, taking into account weather, crowds, prices and available activities. Spoiler: if you are dreaming of the Adrenaline Adventures zipline in San Vigilio di Marebbe, summer is your season.

Spring (April — June)

The Dolomites Awaken

Spring in the Dolomites is a season of transition. The snow melts gradually, meadows fill with wildflowers and temperatures begin to rise, but at altitude winter can still make its presence felt.

April: the valleys are already green, but high-altitude trails are often still snow-covered. Valley temperatures: 5–15°C. A good time for low-altitude hikes and cultural visits.

May: alpine meadows explode with colour. Trails below 2,000 m become accessible. Valley temperatures: 10–20°C. The Adrenaline Adventures zipline opens in May, marking the start of adventure season.

June: the mountains open up completely. Refuges reopen, high-altitude trails clear of snow. Valley temperatures: 15–25°C. Less crowded than July–August, with long, bright days.

June is the Dolomites' secret month: lower prices, fewer tourists, very long days and nature at its most colourful. If you can choose, it is often the best time of all.

Spring Activities

  • Low and mid-altitude hikes
  • Zipline (from May)
  • Mountain biking on valley trails
  • Cultural and gastronomic visits

Summer (July — September)

Peak Adventure Season

Summer is the premier season in the Dolomites for outdoor activities. Temperatures are pleasant, every trail is open and the range of experiences available is at its greatest.

July: full summer at altitude. Valley temperatures: 18–28°C, at altitude: 5–15°C. Peak tourist season — book everything in advance. Afternoon thunderstorms possible.

August: the busiest month. Temperatures similar to July. Prices reach their peak. Booking well ahead is essential, especially for the zipline and accommodation.

September: the golden month. Crowds thin out, autumn colours begin to appear, the sky is often strikingly clear. Valley temperatures: 12–22°C. Many consider it the perfect month to visit the Dolomites.

Why Summer Is Ideal for the Zipline

The Adrenaline Adventures zipline operates from May to October, but summer offers the best conditions:

  • Visibility: crystal-clear views of the UNESCO peaks
  • Temperature: pleasant climate for flying in the open air
  • Extended hours: more time slots available
  • Combinability: pair the zipline with hikes, mountain biking and other activities on the same day

Autumn (October — November)

The Most Beautiful Colours of the Year

Autumn in the Dolomites is pure visual magic. Larch forests turn gold and orange, creating an extraordinary contrast with the grey rock and blue sky. It is the season photographers love most.

October: still excellent for mid-altitude hikes. Valley temperatures: 5–15°C. High-altitude refuges begin closing, but lower ones remain open. Last month for the zipline.

November: the transition to winter. Many facilities close. Valley temperatures: 0–10°C. Snow is possible at altitude. A quiet, low-tourist period — perfect for those seeking solitude.

Autumn Activities

  • Hikes among golden larches
  • Zipline (until October)
  • Wine and local produce tastings (harvest season!)
  • Landscape photography

Winter (December — March)

A Skiing Paradise

Winter transforms the Dolomites into one of the most beautiful ski areas in the world. The Dolomiti Superski network links 12 valleys and over 1,200 km of pistes, while Plan de Corones (Kronplatz) — directly accessible from San Vigilio — is one of South Tyrol's most famous ski resorts.

December: lifts open, Christmas markets in the valleys. Valley temperatures: -5 to 5°C.

January–February: full ski season. Cold but often sunny days. Valley temperatures: -8 to 3°C. Abundant snow.

March: longer days, still plenty of snow, rising temperatures. Excellent for spring skiing.

The zipline is closed in winter (November–April). If your trip is in winter and you want the zipline experience, plan a second summer visit — it is well worth it.

Winter Activities

  • Alpine skiing and snowboarding (Dolomiti Superski)
  • Cross-country skiing
  • Snowshoeing
  • Sledging
  • Christmas markets
