Spring in the Dolomites: What to Do and See

Adrenaline Adventures

There is a secret the Dolomites keep from most visitors: spring. While the world associates these mountains with summer hiking or winter skiing, the months from April to June hold a magic all their own — melting snow revealing wildflower meadows, crystal-clear light, and a tranquillity that vanishes once the summer crowds arrive.

If you are planning a spring visit to the Dolomites, here is everything you need to know to make the most of this extraordinary season.

Nature Awakens

Alpine Wildflowers

Spring in the Dolomites is a spectacle that unfolds gradually. By late March, the first crocuses — purple and white — push through remnants of snow in the valley floors. Narcissi and blue gentians follow in April. By May, alpine meadows transform into carpets of buttercups, anemones and rhododendrons that stretch to the base of the pale rock towers.

The best time to see alpine wildflowers is between mid-May and mid-June. The meadows around San Vigilio di Marebbe host hundreds of different species, creating a landscape that belongs on a postcard.

Wildlife

As the snow retreats, the mountains come alive. Spring is the ideal time to spot chamois, roe deer, marmots and, with luck, the golden eagle soaring above the valleys. The larch and spruce forests fill with birdsong, turning every walk into a multisensory experience.

The First Trails of the Season

Not all trails are accessible in spring — high-altitude routes remain snow-covered until June. But there is no shortage of options at lower elevations.

Recommended Trails: April–May

  • Walk along the San Vigilio stream: flat, easy, perfect for families with children
  • Piz de Plaies trail: panoramic views, accessible from late April
  • Rudo Forest: an enchanting path through ancient larch trees
  • Farmstead trail: visit traditional Ladin farmhouses with views of the peaks

From June Onwards

June opens up the possibilities dramatically. The Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park becomes fully accessible, with trails leading to mountain huts, alpine lakes and breathtaking plateaux. For those seeking the best adventures in the Dolomites, June is the month to begin.

Zipline Season Opens

The Adrenaline Adventures zipline in San Vigilio di Marebbe opens in May and operates until October. In spring, the scenery is particularly striking: residual snow on the peaks, green meadows in the valleys and crystalline light.

Spring is the ideal time to experience the zipline. Here is why:

  • Fewer crowds: compared to the summer months, queues are shorter
  • Perfect temperatures: neither too hot nor too cold — ideal flying conditions
  • Unique scenery: the contrast between snow and green creates a landscape you simply will not see in summer
  • Better availability: easier to book your preferred time slot

With 7 routes, 3 km of flight and speeds up to 80 km/h, the zipline offers an aerial perspective on the Dolomites that no trail can match. For full details, read our complete zipline guide.

Spring Weather: What to Expect

The weather in the Dolomites during spring is changeable — but that is part of the charm. Here is what to expect month by month:

April

  • Temperatures: 5–15°C in the valleys, below zero at altitude
  • Rainfall: frequent showers, snowfall still possible above 1,500 m
  • Sunny days: approximately 12–15 per month

May

  • Temperatures: 10–20°C in the valleys, 0–10°C at altitude
  • Rainfall: less frequent, occasional afternoon thunderstorms
  • Sunny days: approximately 15–18 per month

June

  • Temperatures: 15–25°C in the valleys, 5–15°C at altitude
  • Rainfall: afternoon thunderstorms more common, mornings generally clear
  • Sunny days: approximately 18–20 per month

Tip: mornings are the best time for hiking in spring. Plan your outings early and keep afternoons for visiting villages or relaxing.

What to Pack

The key to enjoying a Dolomite spring is layering. Here is your essential packing list:

  • Waterproof, windproof jacket — non-negotiable in any season
  • Fleece or thermal mid-layer — mornings are cool
  • Breathable T-shirts — for the warmer hours
  • Waterproof hiking boots — trails can be muddy
  • Trekking poles — useful on wet, slippery terrain
  • SPF 50 sunscreen — the mountain sun is intense, even in spring
  • Sunglasses — essential when there is residual snow
  • 20–30 litre daypack — for water, snacks and an extra layer

Spring Experiences Not to Miss

Beyond hiking and the zipline, spring offers unique experiences:

  • Spring markets: in Brunico and Bressanone, featuring local produce and crafts
  • Ladin festivals: traditional celebrations of the local culture
  • Visits to alpine dairies (malghe): many reopen in May with fresh cheese and butter
  • Cycling: valley cycle paths are accessible from April
